Nicotine Patch & Dopamine Gene Researchers examined abstinence from smoking among 752 people eight years after they had taken part in a 12-week trial of nicotine patches.
Women who have a particular version of the dopamine receptor gene -- dopamine is associated with pleasure and addiction and speeds up the release of nicotine --appeared not benefit as much from using the nicotine patch. For women, who wore the patch,"success"ranged from 13 -23%. After 8 years, it was 5 -12%.
